Hva er mate og hvordan lager du det? – En guide for nybegynnere

What is mate?

Mate is a traditional South American drink made from dried leaves of the yerba mate plant (Ilex paraguariensis). It's rich in caffeine, antioxidants, and nutrients, and is just as invigorating as coffee – but with a smoother, more even energy boost without the typical caffeine crash.

What do you need to make mate?

  • Yerba mate – the dried leaves. We recommend starting with Yerba Mate Amanda 1 kg, a classic, mild variety perfect for beginners.
  • A mate cup – traditionally made from gourd, wood, or stainless steel.
  • A bombilla – a metal straw with a filter at the bottom that strains the leaves. Our Bombilla Pico de Loro is a popular choice.
  • Hot water – ideally between 70–80 °C. Not boiling!

How to make mate – step by step

  1. Fill the mate cup about 2/3 full with yerba mate.
  2. Cover the opening with your hand, turn the cup upside down, and shake gently to move the dust to the bottom.
  3. Turn the cup back over and make a small hollow on the side of the leaves.
  4. Insert the bombilla into the hollow.
  5. Carefully pour hot water (70–80 °C) into the hollow – not over the leaves.
  6. Drink through the bombilla and top up with water as needed.

Tips for a better mate experience

Mate can be refilled many times – the same leaves last for 10–15 refills. Try varying the water temperature to find your favorite. Many people like to add a bit of sugar or honey the first few times.
